Sign language has its own importance in the initial years of your baby because at this time it’s the only way your baby can communicate with you. Even before the baby is born, he communicates with his mother through actions by kicking inside the womb. Once he is in this world, he would cry to make sure he is heard and paid attention to whether he is hungry or thirsty. In the initial four months, when the bones are not developed properly, the only way your baby can communicate with you is through crying.
The initial months of the baby is a troublesome period for the mother as well especially if it’s her first baby. She won’t know what the baby requires when he cries and this is where the importance of understanding sign language comes in. if you understand it then you and your baby both would be at ease.
It is important for the mother to start recognizing what her baby wants to tell her through the different ways of his crying in order to create a healthier relationship with him or her. In this way, the mother can easily interact with the baby and so can the baby interact with the mother easily. The mother would know when the baby needs to be fed or when he needs a cuddle. It is not only a way of filing the gaps between you and the baby but also a way of having better communication with the child.
Babies who are small enough to use their hands and legs to signify what they want can be taught how to use sign language in order to make others realize what they need. This is only possible if the mother understands the baby’s signs. Doctors say that if the babies are taught to use sign language in their very initial months so by the time they are 6 months old they will use this language as an effective tool of communication with their parents.
Also, it has been observed that babies at times get aggressive or rash if they find that their needs are not being fulfilled merely because others are unable to understand their language. This situation can further take a devastating turn when the babies start throwing tantrums leading them to fits. Parents should take it as a responsibility to teach sign language to the children so that they do not develop the aggression and their needs are met easily. When the mother starts using sign language with the child, by the time he reaches the age when he can use it too he would be able to communicate better with the elders around him. Also, he would be satisfied that whatever he is saying is being heard and understood.
Also, another advantage of teaching sign language to your child is that it contributes to the better development of his understanding capabilities. Also, it makes it easier for him to read and understand things easily once he is a bit older.
