Is Anyone Ever Really Prepared For The Birth Of Their First Child?
Posted: December 29th, 2011 | Author: Ed | Filed under: Parenting | Tags: babies, parenting | No Comments »If you are expecting a new baby, especially if it is your first child, you may find the plans and preparations to be quite exciting. While this may be true, it is not at all uncommon to feel a little bit panicky, even before your new baby arrives because of everything you need to prepare. However worrying is perfectly natural, I mean is anyone ever really prepared for the birth of their first child?
The quick answer to this question is, not entirely. In fact, there is no way to completely and fully prepare for the birth of a child. This is because there are always things that are unexpected, and most parenting comes from learning as you go. Even though this may be the case, there are still some things you can do to prepare.
One way to start preparing for the birth of your first child is to educate yourself as much as possible. This can include picking up parenting books and magazines, as well as speaking with other parents to learn tips and tricks they have discovered. Another great outlet for information is parenting classes offered locally in your areas. These classes take a lot more effort than just reading a book, but they are an excellent source of information that you may find helpful throughout your parenting journey.
Another way to prepare for your new baby is to begin working on a space for your little one. Begin to think about the nursery, what colors you want it to be, any particular themes you would like to have, and what you would like to have in it. This is also a great time to plan for the baby gear you will need, such as clothes, supplies for feeding, diapers, a baby thermometer in case he/she gets a fever, a first aid kit, and other basics. Completing these types of activities can help you to focus your attention on your new baby so you feel more comfortable.
Finally, take some time to mentally prepare yourself to become a parent. You should familiarize yourself with all of the changes your new baby will bring, and how they will impact your time. This may mean that your work hours will be impacted, or you may have to leave your job for a while. Understand that a new baby is going to require you to focus on him or her completely and you may have to give up things you once enjoyed, such as hobbies or evenings out with friends.
While there is no question that your life will change immensely when your bundle of joy arrives, you must understand that these changes are not bad and will be some of the best you will ever experience. The joy a child brings into a parent’s life is unlike any other and truly a journey that you will enjoy every minute of. Preparing as much as possible prior to your bundle of joy arriving will help you be better prepared for the issues you did not expect. Parenthood, for the most part, is not something that can be planned for, but rather one that should be thought of as an adventure.
