To start with enough pressure and heat over a lengthy period of time is needed to work the carbon into a stunning diamond, but then the diamond is still nearly 90 miles underneath the earth’s surface. The gems that find a path to the surface of the earth do so through volcanic pipes. They are brought up by magma when it climbs up to the earth’s surface in channels and they are left near the surface.
This process can take an incredibly long time and it isn’t an easy journey for the diamonds. But this isn’t the only reason these precious gems are so treasured, their exceptional beauty and strength is what has really made them stand out. The way they sparkle in the light when they are cut well sets them apart from all other gemstones. The spectacular way they refract light makes them quite brilliant and unique. As if that isn’t enough they are also extremely durable, they truly are forever making them the ideal gem for symbolic jewelry like wedding rings.
It seems as if diamonds have been treasured ever since they were identified and they will probably remain popular well into the future, probably forever. The only thing that seems to vary is the way they are used with the cultural movement at the time. The most common use of them in our time is for engagement rings, but even this is shifting a bit. The traditional diamond engagement ring has a clear diamond but newer movements include using a colored diamond for these occasions, like chocolate diamond jewelry.
Along with this shift to natural color stones there has been greater interest in uncut diamonds. This form does not have the brilliance of the cut version, instead it possess a distinct, rough beauty. The green movement may be determining jewelry trends taking us back to the basics or it may be the normal movement of the jewelry industry. Regardless it provides a fun choice in the world of jewelry.
